A loose, uneven splash of liquid, drawn thick and blob-like rather than as clean droplets, added to Unicode in 2024's 16.0 release. Nothing in the design ties it to paint, ink, or any particular liquid over a generic splat, and it's new enough that no settled pattern of use has formed around it yet.
What means
A splash of liquid mid-splat — an irregular blob with droplets flying, like paint hitting a canvas or ink hitting a shirt. The Splatter emoji is gloriously ambiguous on purpose: paint, ink, water, sauce, slime — if it splashes, this is its emoji.
It was added in Emoji 16.0 (September 2024) and was quickly embraced for art, mess, and most notably Holi — the festival of colors — where a flying splash of pigment is exactly the point.
How and when to use it
- Art content, first and always: "Studio day. There is on the ceiling. No regrets."
- Perfect for Holi greetings and color-run recaps: "Happy Holi! 🎨 May your year be this colorful."
- And for everyday chaos: "Toddler + spaghetti = as far as the eye can see."
