By tradition, San Marino was founded in the year 301 by a stonemason named Marinus, making it, by some counts, the world's oldest surviving republic. Its flag pairs white for peace with light blue for liberty, topped by a coat of arms showing the three actual medieval towers that still stand on Monte Titano. The motto Libertas runs underneath on a ribbon.
