That golden face in the center is the Sun of May, added in 1818 to a light-blue-and-white flag first raised six years earlier by General Manuel Belgrano. The pale blue is said to echo the clear sky over the Pampas, and today the whole flag is shorthand for Messi, mate, and anything proudly Argentine.
