Moldavia's old banner carried an ox head, Wallachia's an eagle, and when the two principalities' colors merged during the 1848 uprisings, blue, yellow, and red came together as one flag, arranged vertically unlike most of its neighbors. Popular tradition reads them as liberty, justice, and brotherhood, and the design became official in 1866.
