A Nigerian design competition in 1958 drew almost 3,000 entries, and the winner was a 23-year-old student living in London, Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, whose green-white-green bars stood for farmland and peace. His original sketch had a small red sun in the middle; the committee cut it before independence sealed the design in 1960.
