Mongolia calls the gold symbol on its flag the Soyombo, created by the Buddhist monk Zanabazar in 1686 and later adopted as a national emblem. It stacks flame, sun, moon, triangles, and a yin-yang-like figure read as two fish that never close their eyes, a symbol of vigilance, on the hoist-side stripe of a red-blue-red field. The same emblem appears on the country's official seal.
