A 13th-century chronicle already describes a Latvian tribal banner in maroon and white, which makes this one of the oldest national flag designs still flying anywhere. Popular legend traces the color to a wounded chief's blood staining a white sheet, leaving a clean strip down the middle. It became official in 1921 and returned after Soviet rule ended in 1990.
