Thomas Francis Meagher flew this flag for the first time in Waterford in 1848 and explained it himself: green for Irish Catholics, orange for Irish Protestants, white in between standing for peace between them. It didn't gain constitutional status until 1937, and now it's the one people fly for St. Patrick's Day, a rugby match, or an Irish passport.
