Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to shake off colonial rule in 1957, and artist Theodosia Okoh marked it with a flag of red, gold and green topped by a single black star. That star nods to Marcus Garvey's Black Star Line and stands for African emancipation and unity, a symbol dozens of newly independent nations across the continent would later echo.

A horizontal triband of a red on top, yellow in between, and green at the bottom, the Ghanaian flag is further designed with the black print of a five-pointed star within the central band.
