In 1848, Pacifica Fernandez, wife of President Jose Maria Castro Madriz, suggested Costa Rica double its red stripe and set it in the middle of the blue-white-blue flag, calling it the dawn of true independence. The coat of arms on official versions shows volcanoes between two seas with seven stars for the provinces. Blue reads as sky, white as peace.
