A teenager designed this one: nineteen-year-old Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah won a nationwide contest in 1971 with a red band at the hoist and three horizontal stripes — green, white, black — beside it. Those are the pan-Arab colors, shared with half a dozen neighboring flags and traced back to a 13th-century poem about Arab valor.
