🍔

Hamburger Emoji 🍔

A stacked burger with a bun, patty, and lettuce peeking out the sides — that's the hamburger emoji. It's used for fast food and burgers specifically, from a drive-through craving to a backyard cookout, standing in for casual, no-fuss comfort food.

What 🍔 means

A stacked up burger with two halves of the same sliced bun placed on top and bottom with a slice of tomato, a cheese slice, a cutlet/patty, and a frill of lettuce packed in between (from the looks of it).

Although it says 'ham', the 🍔 Hamburger emoji can be used for any kind of burger (chicken, beef, mutton, etc). It can also signify a sense of being 'sandwiched' in-between someone or something, or stupidity too.

How and when to use it

  • If you're feeling sandwiched or intensely in between two very difficult decisions, etc, you can use 🍔 while texting someone about it. For instance, "Aye. It's easier said than done okay? I feel sandwiched right now, ugh 🍔".
  • Since hamburger can refer to a moronic person, use 🍔 while indicating that very special someone (directly or indirectly). For example, if you're bestie's talking crap like always, use this emoji as a way of saying, "Bro. Forget it, and grow outta your hamburger brain for heaven's sake 🍔". (if y'all are used to insults like this, of course).
  • In obvious use cases, 🍔 can be brought into post captions for pictures or videos or social media stories about hamburgers. As mentioned before, this emoji can be used for burgers made with all types of meat.
  • Apart from using 🍔 for burgers, it can also be used while posting or reposting about famous burger restaurants/eateries too, like Mc Donald's, Burger King, etc.

🍔 in real conversations

What does 🍔 mean in texting?

Comfort food, casual hangout, nothing deeper — burgers occupy the same 'let's just grab food' territory as pizza, minus the delivery-app default status. It works as a low-stakes way to suggest meeting up, and it shows up a lot in cookout and grill-season posts once summer rolls around.

Why did people get so mad about Google's burger emoji?

Google's old Android design put the cheese slice underneath the patty instead of on top, and in October 2017 a tweet pointing that out went viral enough that CEO Sundar Pichai promised on Twitter to 'drop everything' and fix it. Android 8.1 shipped a corrected, cheese-on-top version soon after — a rare case of internet outrage actually changing a company's design.

Is 🍔 used for anything besides food?

Not really beyond the literal meal — unlike some fruit emoji that picked up flirty or suggestive second lives, 🍔 has stayed pretty close to what it looks like: burgers, grilling, road-trip drive-through stops, the occasional joke about a guilty-pleasure meal. It's one of the more honest emoji in the food set.
