Sri Lankans call this one the Lion Flag, for the gold lion gripping a kastane sword at its center, standing for the bravery and sovereignty of the Sinhalese people. Green and saffron stripes near the hoist were added in 1951 to represent the island's Muslim and Tamil communities, and four bo leaves in the corners nod to Buddhist teachings. It became official in 1972.
