Sang Saka Merah Putih, "the lofty red and white," was first raised by hand, sewn overnight by Sukarno's wife, Fatmawati, on the day Indonesia declared independence in 1945. Red for courage, white for purity, colors borrowed from the old Majapahit Empire, it looks almost exactly like Monaco's flag, just proportioned differently.
