Guess the idiom by emoji

Same format as the movie and book riddles, aimed at everyday sayings instead of proper nouns. Twenty idioms, each boiled down to one to three emoji and nothing else — no words, no captions, no cheating. Round one is a warm-up lap for anyone who has heard English spoken out loud. Round three gets properly sneaky. Tap any riddle to flip it over; the answer comes with one line on what it actually means, because a bare saying felt like a wasted opportunity.

Round one: gimmes (1–5)

1. 🍰

Piece of Cake — A dessert standing in for effortless — the laziest metaphor in the language, and somehow it still works.

2. 🌧️🐱🐶

Raining Cats and Dogs — Nobody has ever actually seen a cat fall from the sky. The saying survives anyway.

3. 🐘🚪

The Elephant in the Room — The obvious problem everyone quietly agrees not to mention. The elephant, for its part, is not being subtle about it.

4. ⏰🪰

Time Flies — A clock and a fly doing the same job: reminding everyone the weekend is basically over already.

5. 🔨🎯

Hit the Nail on the Head — Exactly right on the first try — the compliment every carpenter and every know-it-all secretly lives for.

Round two: it gets real (6–14)

6. 💰🌳

Money Doesn't Grow on Trees — The line every kid hears right after asking for something that costs more than a tree is worth.

7. 🥶🦶

Cold Feet — Sudden last-minute doubt, usually surfacing right before a wedding, a big decision, or a diving board.

8. 🐟🌊

Plenty More Fish in the Sea — The breakup consolation prize nobody wants in the moment and everybody eventually believes.

9. 🐍🌱

A Snake in the Grass — A traitor hiding in plain sight, camouflaged just well enough to ruin a barbecue later.

10. 🐺🐑

A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing — Danger wearing a very convincing disguise — the costume fools nobody who bothers to look twice.

11. 🦌🚗💡

A Deer in the Headlights — Frozen, wide-eyed, completely out of a plan — the universal face of getting caught off guard.

12. 🍋🥤

When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade — The most citrus-forward pep talk in the English language.

13. 🔥🍳

Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Fire — Escaping one disaster directly into a slightly worse one. Upgrade energy, running backwards.

14. 🧊💥

Break the Ice — The awkward opening move at a party that has nothing to do with actual ice, thankfully.

Round three: no mercy (15–20)

15. 🥚🧺

Don't Put All Your Eggs in One Basket — Investment advice from someone who clearly dropped a basket once and never got over it.

16. 🚢⛵

That Ship Has Sailed — The polite way of saying the moment is gone, and pretending otherwise won't call it back to shore.

17. 🌈💰

A Pot of Gold at the End of the Rainbow — The reward that stays exactly one step further away no matter how fast anyone runs.

18. 🐱💀❓

Curiosity Killed the Cat — A warning about snooping too far, delivered via the unluckiest cat in idiom history.

19. 🎂🍽️

Have Your Cake and Eat It Too — Wanting both outcomes at once — the one dessert rule the universe still bothers to enforce.

20. 🍒🔝

The Cherry on Top — The small final flourish that turns an already good thing into an unreasonably good one.

Still want more

That's the whole phrasebook — hopefully more of it stuck than the group chat will admit. Riddles not the vibe today? The full emoji quiz hub has streaks, a mystery emoji, and an arcade wing that never runs out. Or drop into The Daily Five for today's five-round test — new puzzle at midnight UTC, no account required, no mercy there either.
